Metasomatic zonation occurs over the longest diffusion distances and is modelled to have timescales up to 20 Ma. External P-T re-equilibration is modelled to have occurred on an order of magnitude greater timescale than internal zonation (~5 Ma compared to ~0.5 Ma using DMg = 10-20m2/s). All the zonation profiles conform well to diffusion controlled reaction models. All internal zonations conform to down P-T reaction simulations. External zonation may be divided into ‘P-T re-equilibration’ and ‘metasomatic’ types, where the former type conforms to down-P-T garnet-spinel transition reaction simulations and the latter does not. Cr-Al and Mg-Ca inter-diffuse in both types of zonation Ti may also be strongly zoned, whereas Fe is not distinctly zoned in any sample. Most of the garnets have strongly developed zonation patterns which are a result of diffusion towards the matrix (external zonation) followed by zonation towards inclusions (internal zonation). The profiles were later modified by exsolution of pyroxenes (with a clear link between Ca content of garnet and the garnet/clinopyroxene partition coefficients) and, in a few cases, by metasomatism causing a zonation of REE. These appear to be closely linked to the concentration of Ca in garnet indicative of a single-stage formation process for the humped profiles. The patterns found are humped for harzburgitic samples and relatively flat for lherzolitic ones. Initial bulk REE patterns were calculated for the pre-exsolution, pre-metasomatism, high-Cr garnets. Many samples have garnets with inclusions of serpentine ± chromite (+ clinopyroxene in lherzolitic samples) whose arrangement are sometimes indicative of exsolution or annealed exsolution textures. forming a range of chromite-garnet peridotite assemblages). However, it has also been found that many Cr-rich assemblages are clinopyroxene-bearing (lherzolitic) as well as harzburgitic (i.e. A high proportion of garnets and chromites in these rocks plot in the diamond facies fields on Cr2O3-CaO and Cr2O3-MgO wt. Newlands and Bobbejaan kimberlites, South Africa, contain suites of highly chromian, garnet-rich peridotites amongst their xenolith population and an investigation of these xenoliths has been targeted because there is an overlap of mineral compositions with the garnet-chromite-olivine paragenesis found as inclusions in diamonds. protokimberlite or carbonatite) fluids/melts that underwent some fractionation during migration or, devolatilized subducted carbonates. Therefore, possible carbon sources for the low-MgO eclogite diamonds include oxidized mantle-derived (e.g. δ13C values of diamond cores (−4‰) dictate the growth medium had higher δ13C values than primary mantle-derived carbon. Model calculations of the co-variation of δ13C–N yielded a partition coefficient (KN) value of 5, indicating that nitrogen is strongly compatible in diamond relative to the growth medium. The coupled δ13C-nitrogen data suggest that the diamond precipitated during fractional crystallization from an oxidized fluid/melt from which nitrogen was progressively depleted during growth. 2.7 and 2.0 Ga, such that diamonds from the high-MgO eclogites could have formed from similar organic matter brought into the Slave lithospheric mantle by subduction.SIMS analyses of a diamond from a low-MgO eclogite show an outer core with systematic rimwards increases in δ13C values coupled with decreases in nitrogen contents, and a rim with pronounced alternating growth zones. However, excursions in δ13C values to −60‰ are known in the organic sedimentary record at ca. The extreme negative δ13C values of the high-MgO eclogite diamonds cannot be produced by Rayleigh isotopic fractionation of average mantle-derived carbon (−5‰) or carbon derived from typical organic matter (∼−25‰). Some of these diamonds have secondary rims with increasing δ13C values from −40‰ to ∼−34‰, which suggests secondary diamond growth occurred from an oxidized growth medium. Diamonds from the high-MgO eclogites display little CL structure and generally have constant δ13C values and nitrogen contents. While diamonds from high-MgO eclogites have low nitrogen contents (5–82 ppm) and extremely low δ13C values clustering at ∼−40‰, diamonds from the low-MgO eclogites have high nitrogen contents (>1200 ppm) and δ13C values from −3.5‰ to −5.3‰.Coupled cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and SIMS analysis of the Jericho diamonds provides insight into diamond growth processes. ![]() Diamonds extracted from the two groups show remarkably different nitrogen abundances and δ13C values. Diamonds from high- and low-MgO groups of eclogite xenoliths from the Jericho kimberlite, Slave Craton, Canada were analyzed for carbon isotope compositions and nitrogen contents. ![]() ![]() In the Graphic Tools menu, click the Animate button, and choose from eleven moves plus their respective variations.
